Havyaka Kannada: The Many Language Worlds of Karnataka

Dr. Padekallu Vishnu Bhatta did his MA in Kannada from Mysore University (1976-78) and PhD from Mangalore University on “Yakshagana Prasangas of Bhagavatha Puraana” (1997). He was a Lecturer, Reader, Professor and Principal in various colleges of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts from 1978 – 2016. He was Principal of colleges in Hebri, Udupi, Bettampady and Hiriadka, and Adjunct Professor at the SVP Kannada Study Centre, Mangalore University (from 2016). He has guided research for MPhil and Doctorate students. He has also conducted refresher courses for Kannada lecturers at various universities and language training programmes for college lecturers and high school teachers; and he has participated in various seminars and symposiums conducted by universities and other institutions.
His fields of interest are Language and Culture Studies, Grammar and Linguistics, Old Kannada, Tulu Language and Literature, Yakshagana, Manuscriptology and book editing. He was the Associate Editor of the Tulu Dictionary project at the Rastrakavi Govind Pai Research Centre, Udupi (1986-87) and Co-Editor of Tuluva, the journal of the Rastrakavi Govind Pai Research Centre, Udupi (2005 onwards).
He was a Member of the Academic Council, Mangalore University (1997-98); Member of Syndicate, Mangalore University (2014-15); Chairman, BOE, Kannada, Mangalore University; Member, BOS, Kannada, Mangalore University; and Member of the Textbook Committee (Kannada) for Mangalore University.
He has written research articles, seminar papers, book reviews and biographies on Tulu Language and Literature, Old Kannada, Grammar, Prosody, Yakshagana and related subjects. He has authored 21 books, edited 28 books, co-edited 21 books, and
translated a book from Tulu to Kannada. These books have been published by prestigious institutions like Mangalore University, Rastrakavi Govind Pai Research Centre, Dravidian University Kuppam, Kannada Sangha Kanthavara, Yakshagana Kendra Udupi, Alvas Education Trust Moodbidiri, Brahmasri Mittoor Purohita Timmayya Bhatta Samprathistana, Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala and others.
His awards and honours include the T Keshava Bhat Award (2021); Sediyapu Award (2015); Dr. T. V. Venkatachala Shasthry Scholar Award – Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bengaluru (2014); Book Award for Yakshaganadhyayana from the Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy, Bengaluru (2017); and President – Bantwal Taluk Kannada Sahitya Sammelana (2018). He has been honoured by Shiroor Matha Udupi, Pejawara Matha Udupi, BMPTB Samprathishtana, Sri Sringeri Matha and the Kannada Sahitya Parishat. A biography on him Panditha Parampareya Padekallu Vishnu Bhattaru was written by Dr. SR Aruna Kumar in the ‘Naadige Namaskara’ Series of the Kannada Sangha, Kanthavara.
