Salma has written two volumes of poetry – One Evening, Another Evening and Green Angel – and the novel The Hour Past Midnight, all of which have been translated into several languages. Lakshmi Holmstrom’s English translation of her novel was shortlisted for the Crossword Book Prize and long-listed for the Man Asian Booker Prize. Her poetry and fiction are well-known in contemporary Tamil literature for the articulation of desire and sexuality as well as the emotions that animate the domestic space every day, subjects that are often considered beneath literary consideration. The recipient of several awards and honours, she runs an NGO called Your Hope Is Remaining. British filmmaker Kim Longinotto made a documentary film about Salma for British television Channel 4; it screened in 100 international film festivals and won 14 international awards.
