BT Jahnavi was born in 1963 to late Dr. BM Thippeswamy and CK Yallamma. Dr. BM Thippeswamy was a well-known eye specialist, MLA and Member of the Karnataka Public Service Commission. She graduated from AVK College Davangere and got her MA Degree in English from the Open University of Mysore.

Her first Kannada story, “Vyabhichara”, was published in the ‘Suddi Sangati’ newspaper in 1987. Later on, her other stories began to appear in popular newspapers such as ‘Lankesh Patrike’, ‘Prajavani’, ‘Taranga’, ‘Samvaada” and others. “Kaledukondavalu haagu ithara kathegalu”, her first collection of short stories was published by Patrike Publications in 1996. Later, her second collection of stories “Hudukata” was published in 2004. “Kallu Balli” her samagra was published in 2014. She has also edited a book titled “Muttisikondavaru” that is based on the services rendered by her late father, Dr. BM Thippeswamy.

BT Jahnavi has received the ‘Sir M Vishveshvarayya Award’, the ‘H.S. Savithramma Datti Award’, the ‘Shantadevi Kanavi Story Award’ and the ‘Dr. Vijaya Subbaraju Sahithya Puraskaar’. She was also awarded the ‘Sahitya Shree Award’ by the Karnataka Sahitya Academy. Furthermore, she received the ‘Navalkar Bruhanmatt Shantaveeramma Mahatayi Award’ and is also the recipient of the ‘Phalgu Katha Award’ recently. From 2013 to 2016, she served as a ‘Member of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy’. Her activities are not limited to the literary field only. She is also active in theatre activities and women’s social movements. She is the ‘Honorary President of the Nomad Tribal Association’ of Davangere District and she currently resides in Davangere.
