Bio

Dr. Gowri Ramnarayan is a journalist, formerly deputy editor, The Hindu, and vocal accompanist to Carnatic maestro MS Subbulakshmi. Now artistic director and in-house playwright, JustUs Repertory, Ramnarayan’s theatre productions combine scholarship and aesthetics to winning acclaim in India, the UK, the US and South Asia.

She has authored children’s books, a biography of MS Subbulakshmi and Dark Horse, a collection of her plays. Her translations include two plays by the Marathi playwright Vijay Tendulkar, as well as biographies and fiction (Kalki Krishnamurthy: His Life and Times (Kalki Biography Project), MS & Radha. Past Forward (OUP), The Sound of the Waves (Hachette India), The Tiger King (Aleph Book Company), Selected Short Stories and Ponniyin Selvan (Penguin). Having served as Fipresci Jury member at international film festivals, she is now Chairperson, Rukmini Devi Arundale Trust, and Adjunct Faculty, Asian College of Journalism, Chennai.
