Bio

Prof. Muzaffar Assadi obtained his M.A. from Mangalore University. Ph.D. and M.Phil. from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; and did post-doctoral studies at the University of Chicago. He served as a Lecturer at Mangalore (two years ) and Goa Universities (2 years), a Reader for eight years at the University of Mysore and a professor for 21 years (2002 onwards till August 30, 2023). He has authored/written 15 books, 18 collaborative volumes on Social Development, and four-volume reports on Tribal displacement and rehabilitation in the national park areas submitted to the Hon’ble High Court of Karnataka. The most recent work is “Colonial and Post-Colonial Identity Politics in South Asia: Zaat/Caste among Muslims,” just released a few days ago by London’s Routledge. Its Kannada version “Alpasankyakaru Mattu Jaati Vyavaste” came out last year and was published by Bahuroopi, Bangalore.

  • He has written more than three hundred articles in various journals and dailies, and written 70 articles in edited volumes.
  • He received the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award and Karnataka Media Academy Award.
  • He has presented more than three hundred papers at national and international conferences, and delivered more than two hundred lectures across India,
  • He was a Rockefeller Fellow at the University of Chicago and a visiting Chair Professor at Russian State University, Punjab and Pondicherry University.
  • In addition to serving as the University of Mysore’s Vice-Chancellor in charge, he also held positions as Director of Gandhi Bhavan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Special Officer of the proposed Raichur University, Chairman of the Department of Political Science at the University of Mysore, and Syndicate member and Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
