Bio
Paavannan is a noted Tamil writer, translator, and critic whose work spans fiction, children’s literature, and literary essays. Known for his realistic portrayal of life, his stories explore the intersections of class, culture, and human resilience. His major novels include Vazhkai Oru Visaranai (1987), Sithargal (1990), and Paimarakappal (1995), all noted for their social realism and psychological depth.
As a translator, Paavannan has played a significant role in bridging Tamil and Kannada literature. His translation of the acclaimed Kannada work Paruvam by S.L. Bhyrappa is widely regarded as a benchmark in literary translation. He also introduced Tamil readers to Kannada Dalit writing through his translations of works like S. Sitthalingaiah’s memoir Oorum, Cheriyum and several other seminal Dalit short stories.
A recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Translation Award (2005) and numerous other honours, Paavannan continues to be a vital voice in contemporary Tamil letters, celebrated for his commitment to realism, social insight, and literary bridge-building.
