Shanta Gokhale is a Mumbai-based bilingual writer, translator, theatre critic and cultural columnist. She has been a lecturer in English, a public relations executive and Arts Editor of the Times of India, Mumbai. She has written two award-winning novels in Marathi, "Rita Welinkar" and "Tya Varshi", both translated by her into English, and three plays, staged in Mumbai and other places. She has authored a critical history of Marathi drama, edited three books on theatre and translated several works of drama, fiction and non-fiction from Marathi into English and vice-versa. She won the Sangeet Natak Akademi award (2016) for overall contribution to the performing arts, the Balshastri Jambhekar award (2016) for her translation of Jerry Pinto's novel, "Em And The Big Hoom", the Ooty Literary Festival Lifetime Achievement award (2018), Theatre Group Thespo's Lifetime Achievement award (2018) and America-based Maharashtra Foundation's Lifetime Achievement award (2019).
