Bio

Hormis Tharakan, is a former Indian Police Service officer. He served the Government in various capacities including Secretary (R) in the Cabinet Secretariat, Govt. of India and Director-General of Police, Kerala. Post retirement in 2007, he has served as Advisor to the Administrative Reforms Commission of India. He was also appointed as Advisor to the Governor in 2007-2008 when President’s Rule was imposed in Karnataka. He served as a Member of the National Security Advisory Board from 2008 to 2010. During the same period, he was also Chief Advisor on Strategic Studies at BrahMos Aerospace, besides being on the Board of Directors of BrahMos Aerospace Trivandrum Limited. Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Geopolitics and International Relations in Manipal University and a Distinguished Scientist on the Visiting Faculty at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, researching into security-related issues. He has been a member of the State Security Commission, Government of Kerala, since 2012. He is currently member of a Committee set up by the Government of Kerala to draw up proposals for a Police University in the State. He was also a member of the Committee on Prevention of Corruption, which submitted its report to the Chief Minister of Kerala in July, 2012. He is on the Board of Governors of Janaagraha, a Bangalore-based organization working for urban renewal in India. He writes on issues related to geopolitics, terrorism, peace and conflict resolution in national dailies, most frequently in the Indian Express.
