Professor Dr. Hampa Nagarajaiah, born in 1936, is one of the major litterateurs of Karnataka. He has authored more than 75 books in Kannada and 25 books in English. His writings, spread over five decades, cover a wide range of topics, embracing different disciplines and fields of research. Some of his books have been translated from Kannada language into Banjara, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Odia, Rajasthani, Tamil, Telugu, Tulu, and Urdu languages. He has taught undergraduate and postgraduate classes for over 38 years. He has served the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, the century old premier literary Institute, as General Secretary as well as President.
With Hampana as his pen name, he is a recipient of a number of state, national and international awards, including the “Jewel of the Jaina World” (USA). Contemporary writers have honoured him with eight Felicitation Volumes. Foreign scholars and writers have presented him with two Felicitation Volumes – SVASTI and SANMATI, for his 75th and 80th birthdays respectively.
Dr. Hampana has presented papers at national and international Congresses and Symposia and delivered Endowment and Foundation Lectures at various universities. His contribution to the study of Jainology, in particular, is significant and seminal.
