Farooq Shaheen hails from Jammu and Kashmir has been writing poetry and criticism in Kashmiri and Urdu since his teens. Well versed in English, Kashmiri, Hindi and Urdu, he has been contributing articles to several papers, magazines, and journals besides writing stories and dramas. He has participated in a number of state level symposia organized by various literary organizations and is a member of the editorial board of several literary magazines.
His published works include a compilation Nigah.i.Noor and a book Gash.i.Malar. He is presently president of Kaij Nag Cultural Forum, one of the literary organizations of his area. He is also an executive member of Adbi Markaz Kamraz, an international literary federation of Jammu and Kashmir. He received first position holder certificate in Natiya competition from Adbi Markaz Kamraz and Idara Itlaat (Daily news paper). He received the Yuva Puraskar 2012 from Kendra Sahitya Akademi for his book, Gash.i.Malar. The book is an in-depth contribution to the understanding and appreciation of certain landmark works in Kashmiri language and folk literature. It has critiqued modern poetry written in Kashmiri and has been appreciated by eminent senior Kashmiri critics.
