Bio
Annabel Mehta was born in Solihull, England in 1940, the youngest of four children. She was sent to a girls’ boarding school at ten. After leaving school at eighteen, she went to the Royal College of Music for two years before changing course to become a social worker. She met her Indian-born husband-to-be Anand Mehta while at the London School of Economics in the sixties and married him in I966 in Mumbai, where she has lived ever since.
In the early seventies, Annabel became a volunteer with Apnalaya, an NGO working with the urban poor to improve challenging conditions in the slums, first as Treasurer and then as President, for which she was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) by the Queen.
She is also known to others as the mother of Anjali Tendulkar, wife of India’s favourite cricketer, Sachin (God!) Tendulkar.
