Bio
Laxmi Ramachandra Siddi was born in Devarkallahalli village in Yellapur taluk, Uttara Kannada district, the eighth in her family of ten children. Her father came from a poor family and gave her an education by working as a labourer. She completed her primary education at a school in the nearby village of Hasanangi, and her high school education in Manchikeri hobli. She is now an Anganwadi, rural child care centre, worker.
Laxmi actively participates in many organizations, programs, and social movements. She acts in plays with social and mythological themes and also gives solo recitals. She is often called to give performances of Janapada geete and maduve hadugalu (folk and wedding songs).
Some of the plays she has acted in include Sattaavar Kateyalla, Kakan Kote, Suriya Shikari, and Attigeya Hettamma. She has also danced and sung widely in performances of Fugdi Nritya and Damami Nritya, the traditional dance form of her Siddi community, who came to the Konkan coast centuries ago from Africa.
Laxmi also writes poems for children, and enjoys reading and watching Yakshagana.
