Saraswati, also known as Julekha Begum, is a legendary figure in Kannada professional and rural theatre. Born in 1944 in Kukanoor, Koppal district, she began acting at six with Sri Mahesh Nataka Sangha. Mentored by eminent theatre personalities, she excelled in diverse roles, including protagonists, antagonists, leads, and comedic characters, earning the title “Abhinaya Sharade” (Goddess of Acting).
Her interfaith marriage to fellow actor Sheikh Chand marked a journey of shared artistry despite financial struggles. Over her illustrious career spanning more than 65 years, she performed in 500+ plays and delivered over 10,000 shows, gaining widespread acclaim for roles like Draupadi, Kunti, and Sita. Her repertoire also includes films like Avala Kannu and Mahatayi.
In recognition of her immense contributions to theatre, Saraswati was honored with the Karnataka Rajyotsava Prashasti, one of the state’s highest civilian awards. Now 80, she continues to inspire with her dedication, resilience, and lifelong passion for the stage.
